The 2018 Hanover County Business Appreciation event, hosted by the Hanover County Department of Economic Development, was held on May 17th at James River Cellars Winery and was the inaugural recognition of Hanover County Legacy Businesses.  The Hanover Chamber of Commerce joined forces with Economic Development as co-hosts. Legacy Businesses are entities that have been located in the County for 50 or more consecutive years.  The Beaverdam District, represented by Supervisor Aubrey “Bucky” Stanley, had five businesses recognized at this year’s event.

Ashland Milling Company, with 64 years of business in Hanover County, has a long history has a milling operation.  Since 1740, the mill has been grinding grain along the banks of the South Anna River in Ashland. The Attkisson family took over operations in 1954 and renamed it Ashland Roller Mills. The mill presently produces flour, meal, and feed, and has diversified into mixes and products used or sold by restaurants, schools, and grocery chains. In addition, Ashland Milling now offers Southern flavorings, extracts and spices, snack foods and specialty gift boxes, with the unique range of products and homemade flavors offer a true taste of southern cuisine.

Flippo Lumber, located in Doswell, is celebrating 112 years in the wood products business. Flippo produces Southern Pine dimensional lumber, decking and timbers that are sold primarily to pallet operations and wood treatment plants. Over the years, the mill has been continuously improved to efficiently use our raw material, allowing more lumber to be produced from each log. Additionally, the improvements ensure that no raw material is wasted. Every part of the log is either consumed in the processing of the finished lumber or sold to other companies who further process it before it is sold to the public. The Flippo family, now in its 4th generation at Flippo Lumber, has a love of the land and the trees that supply their business. This is evident in their ongoing stewardship of the land and support of best practices for forestry management and conservation.
